Fishing

Puerto Vallarta is no stranger to fishing, seeing as it has the Bay of Banderas, and for that matter, the Pacific Ocean, as its next door neighbor. And not only the bay– there are plenty of lakes and rivers within or near the Puerto Vallarta area that also have a good supply of aquatic life for catching. With these bodies of water teeming with thriving marine life, there’s hardly a time when fishermen wouldn’t catch anything.

Deep sea fishing is one of the tourist attractions prevalent in Puerto Vallarta, though this is also the main occupation of many people, especially those living in the fishing villages. Most of the fishermen who catch fish sell them to the many seafood grills and restaurants around the city. This is why a lot of restaurants offer customers the choice of picking their live fish (usually displayed in a tank) and cooking it for them. This ensures that the food is the freshest there is.

Puerto Vallarta waters boast some of the biggest offshore game fishing in the world, with world-class records in both bass fishing and deap sea fishing. With the rich marine life in this side of the Pacific, anyone from amateur fishers to professional anglers can get record-worthy sailfish, dorado, tuna and blue marlins. Other types of fishing include surf casting, inshore skiff fishing, big game fishing offshore, and bass fishing in freshwater lakes.

Puerto Vallarta has replaced Cabo San Lucas as the biggest fishing hotspot in Mexico. Truly, with the immense variety of fish living in its waters, sports fishermen are flocking to Puerto Vallarta for their fishing fix. Sailfish in particular are plentiful the whole year, while seasonal fish include red snappers, bonitos, yellowfin tunas, striped marlins, rooster fish, sea bass and the mahi mahi. Other species that have been caught in that area include groupers, sierra, Spanish macarels, triggerfish, amberjacks, pargos, snooks and rainbow runners.

Since Puerto Vallarta is a big fishing hot spot, it is only fair that rules and regulations are given to maintain the sport fishing in the area. These regulations cover the species of fish allowed for sport fishing. It also stipulates that the fish are meant for sport, and not commercial or other forms of monetary use. Filleting is also forbidden, and it is mandatory that participants have a fishing and boat license in order to join. Also, fishermen cannot catch more than 5 fishes from freshwater sources, and not more than 10 fishes from saltwater sources.
